China tops world in Internet users

2008 was the first year in which china had more Internet users than in the United States. The Internet users in China grew 42% to 298 million. There is no reason to think that this number will go any where but up, only 1 out of 4 people in China have Internet access. The Chines government is pushing for this number to increase very rapidly, the government is trying to have phone and Internet in every village by the year 2010. Of the 298 million people 118 million people are accessing the Internet via mobile phone. Even though China's Internet usage has been dramatically increasing the government is censoring the sites that the public can visit.

I think that it is no suprise that China is the leading Internet user, what is really suprising is that it just happened in 2008. 118 million people are accessing the Internet with a mobile phone that is 40% of Internet users. I doubt that the mobil phone Internet access in the United States is that high. The Chinese governement is trying to basiclly has 100% Internet usage by 2010, this is a very bold and ambishish move. I cannot think of the resources it would take to get one billion people connected to the Internet. I think that it would be a better move for the government to try for 100% connected by a much later date.
