$35 Million For Twitter

Twitter Raises $35 Million From Venture Investors
http://online.wsj.com/article/SB123457085701286361.html

Venture-capital investors have put $35million in to Twitter, an online micro blogging website that allows users to post brief messages. The investors have not said how they plan on making money on the investment yet.
This comes as a big surprise to me, because I know that the online "social networks" are not doing to well in this economic crisis. Facebook is hurting because its main source of income is from advertisements and companies are cutting down on advertising online. So it will be interesting to see how these investors plan on making money on their investments because at this moment it does not seem like that will be a possibility. I don't know how Twitter make capital, but at this time I doubt that they are making any money at all. We will have to wait and see if this is a good move or if crashes and burns, which i think it will.

The Internet to Take Over TV

http://www.cnn.com/2009/TECH/02/06/internet.tv/index.html
More turning to Web to watch TV, movies
by Zach Pontz

In these hard economic times things such as cable TV are the first things that households eliminate in order to cut costs. But there is a solution for people to save money and stay up to date with their favorite TV shows, the Internet. In December there was a record 14.3 billion online videos watched which was a 13% increase from November. Hulu is an online database for TV shows and movies and is a substitute for anyone trying to cut costs on cable. There is a transition from TV to the Internet 24 million TV shows were viewed on Hulu in January a 25% increase from December, in a recent survey 20% of prime-time TV watcher say they watch TV shows on the Internet.

I think that there will be more and more people watching shows and movies on the Internet, just because of its convince and the fact that it costs nothing. The other advantage of the Internet is that there is no waiting for that one show, you can pick when and where you want to watch a show. I do not think that cable will ever lose all of its consumers but I think that the Internet will take a majority of them away.

RIP Facebook?

Facebook turns 5 -- but can it survive?http://www.cnn.com/2009/TECH/02/04/facebook.anniversary/index.html By Simon Hooper

Facebook was started by Mark Zuckerbery when he was 19 and living in a Harvard dorm room in 2004. Now he is the youngest billionaire on the planet and has an estimated fortune on $1.5 billion. Every one knows about Facebook, it give people the ability to stay connected with out really trying. Facebook contributed to Barack Obama's campaign and helped our newest president connect with younger voters. Just to give some background on how popular Facebook is every day 15 million people update their statuses, every month 850 million photos are added, and college student waist an average of an hour and a half a day on the site. In 2006 Facebook rejected a $1 billion dollar bid from yahoo, and in 2007 Microsoft paid $250 million for a 1.6 percent share. This pushed Facebooks value over $15 billion. The problem that has been creeping up on Facebook is that while their main stream of revenue comes from online advertisements, Facebook is not hitting much of a revenue. The global financial crisis is affecting web advertising in a big way, a way that could put Facebook down for good.

I think that even though Facebook is heading towards hard times, that it will have very little problem staying afloat. Every one and their brother are using Facebook, for god's sake my father in on Facebook. Companies have realized that Facebook is a golden opportunity to advertise to any target market. And as a back up plan Facebook could always sell, google bought up Youtube I'm sure that they would be more than happy to add Facebook to their already impressive line up.

We're all going to die

Apocalypse in 2012? Date spawns theories, film By A. Pawlowski
http://www.cnn.com/2009/TECH/science/01/27/2012.maya.calendar.theories/index.html

We all know the stories, 2012 the world is going to end. A myth that has been over played and hyped up for many years. Even if 2012 has been over played there is still some truth behind the stories. It marks the end of a 5,126 year cycle on the Maya calendar when the sun aligns with the center of the Milky Way and the theorist say that there could be a wide range of solar storms, volcanic eruptions, and even cause the rotation of the earth to revers direction. Top Maya researchers say that the Mayas did not intend 2012 to mark the end of the world, but rather a major change. The fear has causes a frenzy of books and movies to be produced in order to ride the doomsday cash cow all the way to the bank. All the books and movies are doing is adding fuel to the fire and increasing fear in the public that is completely unnecessary.

My prediction is one of two things first nothing happens, the reason that the Maya calender stops in 2012 is because the Mayas were sick of making calenders a whole civilization that spent 95% of their live time creating calenders, they must of got board. And the fact that they predicted their own extinction was a lucky guess. My second prediction is that it become a Self fulfilling prophecy we worry about it so much that it comes true.

How does this relate to E-Commerce you ask? It relates because the Mayas have greatly affected our E-Commerce because of all the hype that has been created by the 2012 doomsday. People are creating web sights and talking about it on online forums and even making movies. This is only going to create a world wide panic that could potentially cause " the end of the world as we know it". So my sugestion is that we do noting, stop writing books and making movies, because the last thing we all need right now is somthing eles to worrie about.

New Virus Infects 8 million

Downadup virus exposes millions of PCs to hijack
By Barry Neild
http://www.cnn.com/2009/TECH/ptech/01/16/virus.downadup/index.html

There is a new virus called Downadup and Conficker that exploits a small bug is the Microsoft Windows. It is mostly effecting corporate networks and has not currently done any harm but it has a huge potential to. This virus is spreading like wild fire, this Tuesday there were 2.5 million computer infected on Wednesday there were 3.5 million and on Friday 8 million computer had Downadup on them. This is one of the worst virus that has ever gotten out there. Currently the virus is not stealing information, but it can. It can steal financial information and passwords. It spreads not by e-mail or the web, but by infecting a computer on a network and infects other computer on the same network. Some companies currently have thousands of computers on their networks infected.

I think that this virus could cause very big problems for the corporate world. If hackers have access to corporate financial files then they could exploit and bring down that company. In this article they said how the virus spreads but they did say how it gets into the networks or what they are doing to find who created it. The first thing companies should do is find the computers infected and take them off their network, I know that completely shutting down a network would cause companies to lose a lot of money, but it might be less that letting this virus to continue.

China has Most Internet User s

China tops world in Internet users

http://www.cnn.com/2009/TECH/01/14/china.internet/index.html

2008 was the first year in which china had more Internet users than in the United States. The Internet users in China grew 42% to 298 million. There is no reason to think that this number will go any where but up, only 1 out of 4 people in China have Internet access. The Chines government is pushing for this number to increase very rapidly, the government is trying to have phone and Internet in every village by the year 2010. Of the 298 million people 118 million people are accessing the Internet via mobile phone. Even though China's Internet usage has been dramatically increasing the government is censoring the sites that the public can visit.

I think that it is no suprise that China is the leading Internet user, what is really suprising is that it just happened in 2008. 118 million people are accessing the Internet with a mobile phone that is 40% of Internet users. I doubt that the mobil phone Internet access in the United States is that high. The Chinese governement is trying to basiclly has 100% Internet usage by 2010, this is a very bold and ambishish move. I cannot think of the resources it would take to get one billion people connected to the Internet. I think that it would be a better move for the government to try for 100% connected by a much later date.

A Newer Way to Learn

http://www.cnn.com/video/#/video/living/2009/01/07/kloss.goodbye.chalkboard.ketv

Schools around the country are now using "active boards" instead of chalk boards. Teachers say that it helps and encourages the students to lean while keeping them interested. Teachers can customize their lesson plans, and use the interactive board to project their lessons. With this new active board students do not even have to raise their hands, they can text their answers to the teacher using a cell phone like device. Teacher are excited at the fact that this new teacher tool can and will encourage students to get involved in the class room.

I think that it is about time that something like this was invented. I know that Ohio Northern has smart boards, but from the new report it seem that these active boards can do much more than the smart boards. The teacher receives a wireless hand held clip board thing, that they can use to interact with the active board. It is only a matter of time until this disruptive innovation completely takes over and every school will have to implement these devices into their class rooms.
